How do I become an angel member?

Am I eligible to become an angel investor?

To become an angel investor you must be either a certified High Net Worth Individual or a Self-certified Sophisticated Investor.  The criteria for each of these can be found by downloading the HNWI or Sophisticated Investor certificates here.

What tax relief opportunities are available for angel investors?

Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS)

  • 20% income tax relief on up to £500k of investment per year
  • exemption from Capital Gains Tax on disposal of EIS shares after 3 years
  • allowing losses on the sale of the EIS shares to be offset against either income or capital amounts
  • unlimited Capital Gains Tax deferral on amount re-invested in EIS shares.

Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS)

  • From April 2012 the rate of income tax relief given to investors in SEIS companies is 50% for both the 40% and 50% UK tax payer. 
  • A seed company qualifying for EIS must be a new company, must be unquoted, have 25 or fewer employees and assets of up to a maximum of £200k at the pint of investment.
  • The maximum initial investment is £100k and the maximum cumulative investment in one firm is £150k.
  • Where a capital gain is realised and re-invested under ths scheme in the same year, the gain will be exempt from tax.
  • The combined effect of the Capital Gains Tax holiday and the income tax break offers relief of up to 78% in the first year.

I only want to invest as part of a syndicate, what do I do?

YABA will actively promote syndication in investment opportunities.  For those angels wishing to invest as part of a syndicate we would suggest that you join as an Active Angel member.  This will enable you to attend all the YABA events and get to know your fellow members.  You can also see other angel member's profiles on the YABA extranet and new members of the Active group will be offered an investment buddy for one year.
