We have created a historical virtual world social network for Viking era enthusiasts and students that is being developed and marketed with the support of the JORVIK Viking Centre and the British Museum. These and several other Viking era attractions will promote our comapny to over 2.6 million visitors a year. In addition to this JORVIK estimates that over 2 million people are actively involved in Viking era re-enactment and that almost every school in England teaches the history of the Viking era. Over the past eighteen months I have been developing a new, innovative product aimed at inspiring children to enjoy wearing their prescriptive spectacles. The product will give children more confidence when wearing glasses and help dismiss the negative connotations associated with wearing them.  I was made aware of the problem through my own nine year old son who did not want to wear his glasses, especially in school, due to peer pressure.  In September 2008 Specsavers commissioned a survey highlighting this exact issue.  The product is centred on various fun interactive attachments that can be clipped onto the side of the child's trendy frames.  I have demonstrated the product to the children's Opthalmology Department in Doncaster Royal Infirmary, along with teachers and school nurses in the Doncaster area. All have given extremely positive feedback and feel that this product will combat the negativity surrounding young children and their reluctance to wear glasses.  I have taken the product to Doncaster Councils Deputy Mayor along with the Director and Cabinet Member of Childrens Services who are fully supportive of this venture.  At present there is nothing on the market that competes with this application, it has excellent longevity and scope for expansion. I have a patent pending on the product and registered trade mark.
 

This engine relies on rotary rather than reciprocating motion to generate power. It incorporates combustion chambers formed between a stator & rotor, which can be charged with a mixture of air and fuel.

This product currently exists as a concept, a patent application & a wooden model. Its novel design inhibits the determination of proof of concept intuitively or simplistically, with many variables to be optimized.
The research project is intended to provide such proof, in two phases.

The first will generate a software simulation of the engine. The ability to carry out a multi-variable optimisation rapidly & cost-effectively using a simulation will enable the design rules to be understood & the alternative costly & long development evolution of physical hardware to be avoided, so that the first prototype build can proceed with confidence of success. The biopolymer market is presently served largely by polylactic acid (PLA) technology. Its properties are well defined as are its many limitations such as high energy requirement for raw material extraction, unnecessary utilisation of agricultural land space and a low product melting temperature at 70 deg C. The strategy is to extend the use of biopolymer technology into applications in which current materials will not perform.

Thermoplastics are a $400bn global business. The current $2bn biopolymer market is dwarfed by the commodity petrochemical business e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, acrylic, polyurethane etc. materials. Performance limitations in current biopolymers such as PLA are limiting their scope for market penetration.   We have recently applied for a £20k Grant for Research & Development from Yorkshire Forward. This project is a feasibility study into the synthesis of sustainable biopolymers from a natural chemical discovered originally in Japan in August 2009.  Other organisations may develop patents to manufacture biopolymers in the future but our material(s) has the potential to be unique low extraction energies for raw materials, no requirement for agricultural land utilisation, excellent high temperature performance capability, anti-bacterial characteristics etc.
