Associate Member Profile - Irwin Mitchell

As one of the largest full service law firms in the country, Irwin Mitchell aims to promote the benefits of obtaining timelylegal advice and break down misconceptions about the perceived expense of consulting a lawyer.  The company's business clients range from small to medium-sized firms to multinational companies with a more complex set of legal requirements, but one thing remains the same - Irwin Mitchell's dedication to building a relationship with them.

Paul Firth is the Regional Managing Partner at Irwin Mitchell in Sheffield. "Changes in the legal world have meant that law firms need to be more accessible as well as more transparent in their pricing structure," he says. "We've set up a fixed-price legal service for entrepreneurs and small businesses where initial advice on an issue can be given for just £50 plus VAT without the 'meter running' as may have been the perception in the past."

Irwin Mitchell became an Associate Member of YABA in early 2011, after a meeting with YABA's South Yorkshire Ambassador, Catherine Kennedy. Irwin Mitchell is hosting a Master class in the current series and Paul sees the benefit of getting involved in this way: "It's great to be able to open our doors to new people, showing them the human face of a legal firm and what we have to offer," he says. "Although YABA angel members are experienced business people and accustomed to consulting lawyers, Irwin Mitchell has the expertise to help both investors and entrepreneurs and becoming involved with YABA has allowed us to demonstrate this."

Irwin Mitchell sponsored YABA's Investment Forum held at the AMP Technology Park in September and several of Paul's colleagues took the opportunity to experience what happens at a YABA event. "They were amazed at the energy and enthusiasm of the presenters at the Investment Forum – finding the range of products and services staggering," he says. Irwin Mitchell has also sponsored the MADE Festival and StartUp Britain: "We want to be in there at the ground floor of a new venture, and build a lasting relationship with our clients – become business partners in effect, so that we add value by building relationships, knowing their history and therefore advising them better."

Already dedicated to supporting start-ups and large companies, Irwin Mitchell has also identified the 'intrapreneur' – an established business person or company with a new idea that they want to take forward. Paul explains: "We can advise a business or an individual on the best way to proceed, whatever stage they're at and whatever level of support they need – that's our strength."
